Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin morbilli.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin morbilli pustules, measles, pox (from mid 13th cent. in British sources), plural of morbillus (rare; occasionally attested in British sources) < classical Latin morbus disease (see morbid adj.) + -illus (see -illa suffix). Compare Middle French, French †morbilles, plural (1567).
Pathology.
1. Originally (with plural agreement): a rash of the skin; esp. the maculopapular lesions characteristic of measles. Later (with singular agreement): the disease measles.Measles is the more usual name for the disease in English-speaking countries.

1981 Brit. Jrnl. Exper. Pathol. 62 79 Dead and sick hedgehogs (Erinaceus europeus) were examined,..and paramyxo virus of the morbilli group was isolated.
