Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin morbificare ; Latin morbus , -ify suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin morbificare (5th cent.), or independently < classical Latin morbus disease (see morbid adj.) + -ify suffix. Compare slightly earlier morbifical adj. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mǭ·ɹbifəi) /ˈmɔːbɪfaɪ/.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To make diseased.
