Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Babylōnicus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Babylōnicus Babylonian < Babylōn (see Babylon n.2) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare French babylonique (1496 in Middle French as babilonique ), Spanish babilónico (second half of the 15th cent.), Portuguese babilônico (1525), Italian babilonico (second half of the 14th cent.). Compare earlier Babylonical adj., and also earlier Babylonish adj., Babylonian adj.
