单词 moses boat
释义

Moses boatn.

Brit. /ˈməʊzᵻz bəʊt/, U.S. /ˈmoʊzəs ˌboʊt/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Moses n., boat n.1
Etymology: < Moses n. + boat n.1All uses probably arise ultimately from the story of the rush basket in which Moses was found as an infant (Exodus 2:3), although N.E.D. (1908, s.v. Moses) notes that ‘the Massachusetts use has been said to be derived from the name of Moses Lowell, a famous boat-builder at Salisbury, Mass.’ For a possible connection between the uses in Massachusetts and the Caribbean see Dict. Caribbean Eng. Usage (1996) at cited word. On similar uses of Moses to denote a small ship's boat in German and Danish see H. Henningsen in Mariner's Mirror 63 (1977) 196–7 (although the reference given there to use of the English term in the Navigation Act of 1696 cannot be supported).
Any of various small light boats; spec. (a) U.S. a boat formerly used in Massachusetts, esp. as a ship's boat (obsolete); (b) Caribbean a kind of broad flat-bottomed boat used esp. for fishing or to transfer goods and passengers between ship and shore.
