Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Moselle.

Etymology: < French Moselle (although this is apparently only attested from late 18th cent.) < the name of the river Moselle (French Moselle ; German Mosel ; classical Latin Mosella (1st cent. a.d.)), which rises in the Vosges mountains in France and joins the Rhine at Koblenz in Germany. Compare Mosel n.; in earlier use the wines produced in the French and German parts of the valley are not normally distinguished.

In full Moselle wine. A light, medium dry white wine produced in the valley of the Moselle. Now also: any similar light, medium dry white wine. Cf. Mosel n.
