Etymology: < scientific Latin Mosasaurus, genus name (attributed to W. D. Conybeare, in the source cited in quot. 1822) < classical Latin Mosa , the name of the river Meuse (see Mosan adj.) + ancient Greek σαῦρος lizard (see -saurus comb. form).

Palaeontology.

A genus of mosasaurs; (also mosasaurus) a reptile of this genus.Remains of Mosasaurus were first discovered near Maastricht (on the River Meuse) in 1780.
