Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mosaist.
Etymology: < German Mosaist (1853 in the passage translated in quot. 1857) < mosa- (in mosaisch Mosaic adj.2) + -ist -ist suffix. Compare French mosaïste follower of Mosaism (P. Leroux Humanité (1840) 821). Compare earlier mosaicist n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mōu·zeˌist) /ˈməʊzeɪɪst/.
Obsolete.
A person who believes in the literal truth of the creation story at the beginning of the book of Genesis. Also: the writer of that story (rare).

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mosaïste.
Etymology: < French mosaïste artist who works in mosaic (1812) < mosa- (in mosaïque mosaic n. and adj.1) + -iste -ist suffix.The (later) Italian version of the text cited in quot. 1864 uses Italian mosaicista (see mosaicist n.). Della Valle himself ( Storia del duomo d'Orvieto, 1791) uses musaicista.
Now rare.
