单词 moral virtue
释义

moral virtuen.

Brit. /ˌmɒrəl ˈvəːtʃuː/, /ˌmɒrəl ˈvəːtjuː/, U.S. /ˌmɔr(ə)l ˈvərtʃu/; see also moral adj.
Forms: see moral adj. and virtue n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item, and partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: moral adj., virtue n.
Etymology: < moral adj. + virtue n., after post-classical Latin virtus moralis (mid 6th cent.), Middle French vertu morale (late 13th cent. in Old French). Compare Old Occitan vertut moral (15th cent.).Post-classical Latin virtus moralis is apparently a translation of ancient Greek ἀρετὴ ἠθική, used by Aristotle (e.g. Nicomachean Ethics 1103a5ff.) in contrast with ἀρετὴ διανοητική ‘intellectual excellence’.
Excellence of character or disposition, spec. as distinguished from intellectual excellence (ancient Greek ἀρετὴ διανοητική), or from the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity (see theological adj. 1, and cf. cardinal virtues at cardinal adj. 1); an instance of this.
