Compare Old Occitan vertut moral (15th cent.).Post-classical Latin virtus moralis is apparently a translation of ancient Greek ἀρετὴ ἠθική, used by Aristotle (e.g. Nicomachean Ethics 1103^a5ff.) in contrast with ἀρετὴ διανοητική ‘intellectual excellence’.

Excellence of character or disposition, spec. as distinguished from intellectual excellence (ancient Greek ἀρετὴ διανοητική), or from the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity (see theological adj. 1, and cf. cardinal virtues at cardinal adj. 1); an instance of this.
