Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mops n.1, mopsy n., -ical suffix.
Etymology: Probably < mops n.1 or mopsy n. + -ical suffix.Blount Glossographia (1656) explains the word as ‘that cannot see well; Hence perhaps comes our phrase mop-ey'd ’ (see mope-eyed adj.). This explanation was copied by many later dictionaries. The following quot. probably shows a different word ( < English regional mopse , mopes ‘to mope’, apparently a variant of mope v.):1823 E. Moor Suffolk Words (at cited word) Mopsical, low-spirited, drooping, moping.
Obsolete. rare.
Perhaps: pettish; petulant like a spoiled child.
