Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. mucosobulbar Brit. /mjuːˌkəʊsə(ʊ)ˈbʌlbə/, U.S. /mjuˌkoʊsoʊˈbəlbər/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mūcōsus , -o- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin mūcōsus mucous adj. + -o- connective. Compare muci- comb. form and muco- comb. form.Found from the early 19th cent. in a small number of formations exemplified below. Compare French mucoso- (formations in which are found from beginning of the 19th cent., in e.g. mucoso-puriforme (1826 or earlier; compare muco-puriform adj. at muco- comb. form ), mucoso-séreux (1826 or earlier; compare mucoserous adj. at muco- comb. form )).
