Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: muco- comb. form, -oid suffix.
Etymology: < muco- comb. form + -oid suffix, after German Mucoïd (C. T. Mörner 1894, in Zeitschr. f. physiol. Chem. 18 250). Compare earlier mucoid adj. and ovomucoid n.The reference to Cohnheim in quot. 1901 relates to O. Cohnheim Chem. der Eiweisskörper (1900) a. iii. 69.
Biology.
A mucin-like glycoprotein; a mucoprotein.Also as a second element: cf. orosomucoid n., ovomucoid n., seromucoid n. at sero- comb. form 2.
