Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mortgage v., -or suffix.
Etymology: < mortgage v. + -or suffix. Compare mortgager n.Although the form mortgageor , presumably intended to indicate unambiguously a pronunciation in /-dʒ-/, is recorded in a number of dictionaries, it is recorded only rarely in actual usage (compare also the earlier form mortgageour in quot. 1543, and the form obligeor s.v. obligor n.).
Law.
A person who mortgages property as a security for debt; the borrower in a mortgage.Usually opposed to mortgagee, but cf. mortgagee n. 2, and see also mortgager n.
