Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: mort n.1, ancestry n.
Etymology: < mort n.1 + ancestry n., after post-classical Latin mors antecessoris (from 1184 in British sources; < classical Latin mors death (see mort n.1) + antecessoris , genitive of antecessor ancestor n.). Compare earlier mort d'ancestor n.With phrases brief of mortancestry, assize of mortancestry compare post-classical Latin breve de morte antecessoris (1225 in a British source), assisa de morte antecessoris (c1185 in a British source). Compare also the Scots form mortantecessory recorded in use in the 15th cent. (see Dict. Older Sc. Tongue s.v. mortantecessory). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mǫɹtæ·nsėstri) /mɔːˈtænsɪstrɪ/.
Chiefly Scots Law. Obsolete.
= mort d'ancestor n. Chiefly in brieve of mortancestry n. a warrant from Chancery authorizing an inquiry by a jury when the legitimacy of a property-holder's possession of a property has been challenged by a descendant of a former possessor, who claims to be its rightful heir.
