Compare Mussulmans n., Malays n.The latter explanation is suggested by Yule and Burnell ( Hobson-Jobson (1886) 447/1), who refer to the parallel forms Malabars for Tamil (compare Malabar n. 2), Bengals for Bengali, Indostans for Hindustani (compare quot. 1772 at Hindustani n. 1), and Turks for Turkish.
