Etymology: < moor n.1 + hen n.1The relationship between this word and English regional moornen in the same sense (recorded in Eng. Dial. Dict. from Kent) is unclear. Compare Old English mōrhana (one isolated attestation as an apparently erroneous gloss for Latin fasianus pheasant; compare discussion at hen n.1).
1. English regional (northern), Scottish, and Irish English. The female of the red grouse, Lagopus lagopus. Cf. moorcock n.
