Etymology: < moon n.1 + wort n.1, after post-classical Latin lunaria lunary n.1 Compare Dutch maankruid (1608); with sense 2, compare German Mondkraut.With small moonwort , lesser moonwort (see sense 1), compare former botanical name Lunaria minor . With great moonwort , greater moonwort (see sense 2), compare former botanical name Lunaria major.
1. Originally (more fully †small moonwort, †lesser moonwort): a small fern, Botrychium lunaria (family Ophioglossaceae), which has pinnate or pinnately lobed sterile fronds with crescent- or fan-shaped segments. Later also: any member of the genus Botrychium. Also moonwort fern. Cf. lunary n.1 (b).
