Etymology: < Italian mortadella (14th cent.; mid 14th cent. as mortadello ) < classical Latin murtātum sausage seasoned with myrtle berries ( < murta , myrta myrtle tree, myrtle berry, variant of myrtus (see myrt n.) + -ātum , neuter of -ātus -ate suffix¹) + Italian -ella -ella suffix. Compare Middle French, French mortadelle (15th cent.).

Any of several types of Italian (esp. Bolognese) sausage; (now) spec. a thick smooth-textured pork sausage containing pieces of fat and typically served in slices.
