γ. 1500s morest spycke, 1500s moryskpyke.

Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Or perhaps a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: Moorish adj.2, pike n.4; French pique.
Etymology: Probably < Moorish adj.2 + pike n.4 or its etymon Middle French pique, with reference to a belief that the weapon was a Moorish invention.Middle English forms in -a- are unexplained; if they do not suggest a different etymology, they may show confusion with or remodelling after another word (compare e.g. French maure : see Moor n.2). The 16th cent. form morest spycke apparently represents a misinterpretation of the word as a compound formed < morest (perhaps a variant of Moorish adj.2 with excrescent -t (see T n.)) + spike n.2
Weaponry. Now historical.
1. A type of pike supposed to be of Moorish origin. The morris-pike was the standard 16- or 18-foot (approx. 5-metre) pike used in England and Scotland.
