Cuvier Thierreich (1822) II. 360; written Morrhua by some other writers) < morhua (also morrhua ), specific name of the cod (Linnaeus 1758; mid 16th cent. in post-classical Latin in both forms) < post-classical Latin morua cod (1256 in a British source; also in forms moruca (from 1265 in British sources), moruta (1244)) < the same base as morue (see morhwell n.). Compare earlier post-classical Latin morius, morus cod (from c1170 and c1200 respectively in British sources). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mǫ·ruă) /ˈmɒruːə/.
