Origin: A borrowing from a Nanticoke–Conoy language.

Etymology: < a cognate in a Nanticoke–Conoy language of Munsee mo:náhke:w, lit. ‘earth-digger’.Linnaeus, introducing scientific Latin monax in his name for the woodchuck, Mus monax ( Systema Naturæ (1758) I. 60), cites Edwards (compare quot. 1747). A genus Monax was proposed for prairie dogs by Warden in 1819, but the earlier name Cynomys has priority.

U.S. (chiefly regional). Now rare.
