Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mouton.

Etymology: In sense 1 < Middle French mouton (in épaule de mouton , lit. ‘shoulder of mutton’, with reference to the shape of the armour; < épaule (see spauld n.) + de de prep. + mouton : see mutton n.); in sense 2 apparently arising from an erroneous interpretation of examples of sense 1 (see below). With sense 1 compare slightly later polder mitton n.
