Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin motmot.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin motmot (17th cent., earlier momot: see quots. below; > scientific Latin Momotus, name of the typical genus); further etymology unknown. Compare French momot (1779 in Buffon), Spanish momot (1805 or earlier).1635 J. Eusebius Nierembergius Hist. Nat. 209 De momot.1649 F. Hernandez Rerum Medicarum Thes. Any of several Central and South American birds comprising the family Momotidae (allied to the kingfishers), the members of which have colourful plumage with two long racket-shaped tail feathers and are mainly insectivorous.
