Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman and Middle French morphé (c1240 in Anglo-Norman; also in Old French as morfoies, plural (1256), morphee (c1300), morfea (c1314); French morphée ), partly < their probable immediate etymon Italian morfea (although this is apparently only recorded from the first half of the 14th cent.), and partly < their ultimate etymon post-classical Latin morphea (from c1170 in British sources; more recently written morphoea : compare morphoea n.), of uncertain origin; perhaps shortened < ancient Greek ἀμορϕία unsightliness, ugliness < ἀ- a- prefix6 + μορϕή (see -morph comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare slightly earlier morphoea n.With black , white morphew compare post-classical Latin morphea alba , nigra (late 13th cent.). The phonetic development underlying the β. forms is unclear.
