Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Partly a borrowing from Bengali. Etymons: Hindi mūg; Bengali mug.
Etymology: < Hindi mūg and its cognate Bengali mug < Sanskrit mudga (see mung n.2 and compare the etymological note at that entry). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mūg) /muːɡ/.

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Moog.
Etymology: < the name of Robert A. Moog (1934–2005), U.S. engineer, inventor of the forerunner to the commercially available synthesizer, and head of Moog Music Inc. (formerly the R. A. Moog Co.), which produced the later instruments.The electronic filter for the instrument was patented in 1969 (submitted 1966).
Music.
A proprietary name for: any of a range of electronic keyboard synthesizers. Also Moog synthesizer.
