Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Zulu. Partly a borrowing from Xhosa. Etymons: Zulu umutsha; Xhosa umutya.
Etymology: < Zulu umutsha and its cognate Xhosa umutya loin-covering. The β. forms at montero n. perhaps show alteration after -ie suffix, -y suffix6.The forms umutsha, umutya are occasionally found in English contexts.
South African.
A loincloth made of animal tails or leather strips, worn in South Africa as part of traditional Zulu male dress, esp. on ceremonial occasions. Also: a square of beads traditionally worn as a loin-covering by Zulu women.
