Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mother Hubbard.
Etymology: < the name of Old Mother Hubbard, a character in a well-known nursery rhyme.The nursery rhyme is first found in S. C. Martin Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard & her Dog (1805). The character of Mother Hubbard, however, is of older origin (compare Spenser's satire Prosopopoia, or Mother Hubberds Tale (1591)).
