Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin motatorius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin motatorius (1758 as specific epithet, Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10) 616; < post-classical Latin motator mover (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian; < classical Latin mōtāt- , past participial stem of mōtāre to set in motion, keep moving (see motable adj.) + -or -or suffix) + -ius , suffix forming adjectives) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mōutătōə·riəs) /məʊtəˈtɔərɪəs/.
Entomology. Obsolete. rare.
Of the legs of certain insects: in constant vibratory motion.
