Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish montuno.
Etymology: < American Spanish montuno wild, rustic, untamed (1862 in a Cuban source), probably < monte monte n.2 In sense 2, shortened < son montuno n.Use as noun in sense 1 is apparently unattested in Spanish; use as noun in sense 2 is apparently first attested later in Spanish (1975).
1. A traditional costume worn by Panamanian men, consisting of short white trousers and an embroidered shirt and sometimes also including a woven hat and a bag over the shoulder; any of the items of this costume, esp. the shirt or the hat.
