Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French montre.
Etymology: < French montre (1680 as montre d'orgues in this sense; see muster n.1). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (moṅtr) /mɔ̃tr/.
An organ stop having pipes that form part of the visible case of the instrument; esp. the open diapason of the great organ.
