Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Montpellier.
Etymology: < Montpellier, the name of a town in the department of Hérault in southern France.In senses 2 and 5, after earlier uses of Mons Pessulanus , post-classical Latin form corresponding to Montpellier , in forming scientific Latin specific names: with Montpellier maple at sense 2, compare Acer monspessulanum (Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) 1056); with Montpellier snake at sense 5, compare Coluber (now Malpolon) monspessulanus (J. Hermann Observationes Zoologicae (1804) 283). For use of Montpellier to designate colours (see sense 4), see quot. 1930 for Montpellier green n. at sense 4b. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (moṅpęlye) /mɔ̃pɛlje/.
