France 4 169) < Montmorillon , the name of a town in the department of Vienne in west-central France where the mineral was first identified + -it -ite suffix¹.

Originally: a rose-red clay mineral. Now: any montmorillonoid; spec. a monoclinic alumina-rich montmorillonoid containing some sodium and magnesium. Also: the montmorillonoids collectively.
