Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Montmorillonit.
Etymology: < German Montmorillonit (used in C. F. Naumann Elem. Geol. (ed. 2, 1850) 307; after French montmorillonniste , Mauduyt 1847, in Bull. de la Soc. Géol. France 4 169) < Montmorillon , the name of a town in the department of Vienne in west-central France where the mineral was first identified + -it -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy.
Originally: a rose-red clay mineral. Now: any montmorillonoid; spec. a monoclinic alumina-rich montmorillonoid containing some sodium and magnesium. Also: the montmorillonoids collectively.
