Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monticolus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin monticolus (1851 or earlier as a specific epithet; < classical Latin monticola mountain-dweller < monti- , alternative stem of mōns mount n.1 + colere to inhabit: see -colous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French monticole, adjective (1543 in Middle French in general sense ‘living in the mountains’, 1832 in botanical use).
