单词 mouflon
释义

mouflonn.

Brit. /ˈmuːflɒn/, U.S. /ˈmuflɑn/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, mouflons.
Forms: 1700s– moufflon, 1700s– mufflon, 1800s– mouflon.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mouflon.
Etymology: < French mouflon (1764 in Buffon as moufflon ; earlier borrowed as †muffle (see muffle n.4), †mufle (1636)), either < Sardinian muvrone or < Corsican mufrone , muvrone , all ultimately < post-classical Latin mufron (Polemius Silvius, 5th cent.), of unknown origin (perhaps from a pre-Roman language or representing a foreign loanword). Compare muffle n.4, muffrone n.
1. Originally (now more fully European mouflon): a small wild sheep with brown wool, Ovis musimon, found on Sardinia, Corsica, and Cyprus. Later also (in full Asiatic mouflon): the closely related wild sheep O. orientalis, found from Iran to Asia Minor. Formerly also: †any of various other wild sheep of the Old World; esp. (more fully †maned mouflon, †ruffed mouflon) the Barbary sheep, Ammotragus lervia (obsolete). The mouflon O. musimon is usually thought to be a feral descendant of primitive domestic sheep ( O. aries). O. musimon and O. orientalis may be conspecific, and both forms are now sometimes included in O. aries.
