Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French moufette.
Etymology: < French moufette, mouffette (1765 in Buffon) < mofette , mouffette noxious gas (see mofette n.), on account of the foul smelling liquid which the animal sprays as a defence mechanism.
Zoology. Obsolete.
