Origin: Probably either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: English motza , matzo n.; Yiddish matse.
Etymology: Probably < motza, variant of matzo n., or its etymon Yiddish matse (unleavened) bread (see matzo n.). Compare bread n. 4c, dough n. 5.Yiddish matse earlier (1894–1900) gave rise to a short-lived derogatory usage in U.S. slang in sense ‘a Jewish person’: see J. E. Lighter Hist. Dict. Amer. Slang (1997) II. 600 s.v. motzer.
