Etymology: < the name of Morocco (see Morocco adj. and n.) + -an suffix. Compare French Marocain , adjective and noun (1630 in Middle French as Marroquin ; compare earlier maroquin morocco leather: see Morocco adj. and n.).With the form Maroccian compare -ian suffix. Compare the following, where Morruekyn (also in form Moruecan, and in form Marochian in S. Purchas Pilgrimage (1614)) apparently denotes an inhabitant of the city of Marrakesh (the name of which appears as Moruecos in this text):1609 R. C. True Hist. Disc.
