Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: montan wax n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < montan (in montan wax n.) + -ic suffix, after German Montansäure (E. van Boyen 1899, in Zeitschr. f. angewandte Chemie 12 65/1).
Chemistry.
1. montanic acid n. octacosanoic acid, a monocarboxylic long-chain fatty acid, CH3—(CH2)26—COOH, occurring naturally in waxes.
