单词 montagu
释义

Montagun.1

Brit. /ˈmɒntəɡjuː/, U.S. /ˈmɑn(t)əɡju/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Montagu.
Etymology: < the name of George Montagu (1751–1815), British naturalist. All senses reflect earlier uses of Montagui (genitive), Montacuti (genitive), and Montacuta , scientific Latin forms corresponding to the surname Montagu (in the latter forms, apparently introduced in zoological use by W. Turton, the surname being apprehended as < French mont agu ), in forming scientific Latin species and genus names. With sense 1 (Montagu's sucker , etc.), compare scientific Latin name Cyclopterus (now Liparis) montagui (E. Donovan in Nat. Hist. Brit. Fishes (1804) III. plate lxviii; listed as C. Montacuti by W. Turton Brit. Fauna (1807) I. 115). The species was discovered by Montagu and named in compliment to him. With sense 2a (Montagu's Venus ), compare former scientific Latin name Venus montagui (L. W. Dillwyn Descriptive Catal. Recent Shells (1817) I. 167; listed as V. montacuti by W. Turton: see quot. 1819 for Montagu's Venus n. at sense 2a). The species was discovered by Montagu (who described it under the name of Venus compressa ). With sense 2b (Montagu shell ), compare scientific Latin genus name Montacuta (W. Turton Conchylia Insularum Britannicarum (1822) 58), coined in honour of Montagu. With sense 3 (Montagu's blenny ), compare former scientific Latin name Blennius Montagui (J. Fleming Hist. Brit. Animals (1828) 206). The fish was described by Montagu as a variety of the Blennius (now Coryphoblennius) galerita of Linnaeus, but some writers considered it a distinct species. With sense 4 (Montagu's harrier ), compare former scientific Latin name Circus montagui (see quot. 1843 for Montagu's harrier n. at sense 4).
