Etymology: < Middle French monstration (1489; 13th cent. in Old French as moustracion ) and its etymon classical Latin mōnstrātiōn-, mōnstrātiō showing, demonstration < mōnstrāt- , past participial stem of mōnstrāre (see monstrate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier monstrance n.1 and monstrison n. Compare also earlier demonstration n.
Obsolete. rare.
