Etymology: < Balkan adj. + -ize suffix, originally (in sense 1) after Italian balcanizzare (1915 or earlier). Compare earlier balkanizing n. and slightly earlier balkanization n. Compare French balkaniser (1916 or earlier), German balkanisieren (1915 or earlier).
