Etymology: < scientific Latin Monodontidae, family name < ancient Greek μονοδοντ- , μονόδους (see monodon n.) + scientific Latin -idae (see -id suffix3), after scientific Latin Monodon , genus name (see monodon n.). Compare earlier monodont n. and adj., monodon n.

A whale of the family Monodontidae, which comprises the narwhal and the beluga (white whale).
