Etymology: < mono- comb. form + classical Latin domus home (see dome n.) + -ous suffix.Despite the claim in quot. 1905, this term has not been located in the works of A. H. Forel.

Chiefly Entomology.

Of a colony of social hymenoptera, esp. ants: occupying a single nest. Of a population or species: consisting of such colonies. Also, of any other animal: permanently based at a single location (rare). Opposed to polydomous.
