单词 monoculus
释义

monoculusn.adj.

Brit. /mɒˈnɒkjᵿləs/, /məˈnɒkjᵿləs/, U.S. /məˈnɑkjələs/
Inflections: Plural monoculi.
Forms: late Middle English– monoculus, 1500s monoculos.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin monoculus, Monoculus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin monoculus the caecum (1363 in Chauliac), a one-eyed person or creature (7th cent.; from 12th cent. in British sources), irregularly < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + classical Latin oculus (see oculus n.). In sense A. 3 independently < scientific Latin Monoculus, so called because most of the animals have a single eye, or have eyes very close together. With use as adjective compare post-classical Latin monoculus , adjective (from 12th cent. in British sources); compare Italian†monoculo (1598 in Florio glossed ‘that hath but one eie. Also..the blinde gut’). The word is perhaps attested earlier in sense A. 2 as a surname, Simon Monoculus (1212), though it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as Middle English or post-classical Latin.
