单词 monochrome
释义

monochromen.adj.

Brit. /ˈmɒnə(ʊ)krəʊm/, /ˌmɒnə(ʊ)ˈkrəʊm/, U.S. /ˈmɑnəˌkroʊm/
Forms: 1600s–1800s monochrom, 1700s monocrome, 1800s– monochrome.
Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian monocromo.
Etymology: < Italian monocromo (1598 in Florio as noun in form †monocroma , 1798 as adjective) < mono- mono- comb. form + ancient Greek χρῶμα (see chrome n.), after ancient Greek μονόχρωμος of one colour; compare Hellenistic Greek μονοχρώματος (see monochromatic adj.), ancient Greek μονόχροος (see monochroic adj.). Compare post-classical Latin monochroma image (perhaps a sculpture) in one colour (rare), French monochrome (1634 apparently as noun in an isolated attestation rendering Pliny's use of classical Latin monochrōmatos (see monochromatic adj. and n.), 1765 as adjective).
