Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μονόχρους , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μονόχρους of one colour ( < μονο- mono- comb. form + χρώς colour < the same stem as χρῶμα colour: see chrome n.) + -ic suffix. Compare earlier monochroous adj., and also earlier monochromic adj., monochromatic adj. Compare also earlier polychroic adj., dichroic adj.

Having or showing a single colour; monochromatic. Of a crystal: not exhibiting different colours when viewed in different directions (cf. pleochroic adj.).
