Etymology: < money n. + pit n.1In specific use in sense 2 popularized by the title of the 1986 U.S. film The Money Pit (see quot. 1984 at sense 2).
1. A pit dug to hide treasure or money; a pit in which money is expected to be found.The name money pit has come to be associated particularly with such a pit on Oak Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, of which the treacherous design and absent (or so far undiscovered) treasure seem to have given rise to the apparently divergent sense 2: see quot. 1974.
