单词 baleys
释义

baleysn.

Forms: Middle English baleis, Middle English baleys, Middle English ballys, baleese, 1500s balys.
Etymology: < Old French baleis, singular subject case (or plural object case) of balei (modern balai) besom, broom. As early Old French had singular nominative baleis, while later Old French had singular balei, plural baleis, it is difficult to say from which of these the final -s in English was derived. The quasi-collective sense of ‘birch’ points to the plural.
Obsolete.
A rod; also a bundle of twigs used in flogging, a ‘birch,’ a scourge.
