Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin monēta , -ization suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin monēta money n. + -ization suffix. Compare French monétisation (1823 in sense ‘action of making (paper money) into legal tender’). Compare also monetize v., and slightly earlier demonetization n. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (mǫ:nĭtəizēi·ʃən) /ˌmɒnɪtaɪˈzeɪʃən/.
