Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: Latin monēta , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin monēta (see money n.) + -ist suffix, after Spanish dinerista (a1645 in the passage translated in quot.). Compare monetism n.
Obsolete.
A person who worships money. Cf. monetism n.Apparently an isolated use.
