单词 monothelite
释义

Monotheliten.adj.

Brit. /məˈnɒθᵻlʌɪt/, /mɒˈnɒθᵻlʌɪt/, U.S. /məˈnɑθəˌlaɪt/
Forms: late Middle English Monachelite, late Middle English Monalechite, 1500s 1700s Monothelit, 1500s– Monothelite, 1600s Monotholite.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin monothelita.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin monothelita (5th cent.) < (with assimilation of the ending to -ita -ite suffix1) Byzantine Greek μονοθελήτης (John of Damascus, 8th cent.) < ancient Greek μονο- mono- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek θελητής (Septuagint) < ancient Greek θέλειν (also ἐθέλειν) to wish, will (further etymology uncertain) + -ητης, agent suffix. Compare French monothélite (1495 in Middle French as monothelite; 1683 as adjective), Spanish monotelita (1594).In quots. ?a1439 at sense A. and a1464 at sense A. the context refers to the support of the emperor Heraclius for the Monothelite doctrine, but the spellings in Mona- may have been influenced by confusion with the Monarchians (see Monarchian n. and adj.).
